1 Taynal Mosque, Tripoli, north of Lebanon, Lebanon

The mosque of Emir Seif ed-Dine Taynal el-Hajele was constructed in the year 1336 in the middle of Tripoli among extensive orange groves, not far from the Abu Ali river, although at present it is surrounded by tall buildings and roads.

This mosque was constructed on top of the remains of a church put up by the Carmelite Fathers at the time of the Crusades, while the Crusaders themselves had built the church on the traces of a Roman temple dedicated to Zeus, locally called Baal. In this mosque there is the vault of Seif ed-Dine Taynal close to the inner hall of prayer and a marble patio surrounded by four chambers that were used by the councils of the four schools of magistrates of Tripoli during the time of the Mamelukes, the Shafiyyeh, the Hanafiyyeh , the Malikiyyeh and the Hanbaliyyeh.

3 The Maronite Patriarch Gabriel Hajjula - known as "Sheikh Masoud" - whom the Mamluks burned alive in 1367.

  • Patriarch Martyr Gabriel of Hjoula, 1357-1367
  • He was born in the village of Hjoula, in the provinces of Byblos
  • He became a monk and ascetic and lived in Wadi Qannoubine. In the spring of 1357, the bishops and notables of the sect elected him Patriarch of the Maronites for his life and virtues, after the dismissal of Patriarch John Al-Akouri.
  • He sat on the chair of Ilige, the seat of the patriarchs in Mayfouq.
  • After the Crusader king of Cyprus attacked Alexandria and burned it in the year 1365, the Mamluks launched a campaign against the Maronites of Mount Lebanon to take revenge on them. At the insistence of the bishops, Patriarch Hjoula sought refuge in a cave in his town, Hjoula.
  • The Mamluks killed the monks of Covent Ilige and burned it, and arrested some notables and members of the sect and threatened to kill them if the patriarch did not surrender himself.
  • He ransomed his subjects and surrendered himself, so he was taken to Tripoli, burned in its citadel, and buried in the locality of Taylan in Tallat al-Raml (Mosque of Taynal now) on the first of April of the year 1367 AD. And the name of Sheikh Masoud was written on his grave to mislead the believers about his whereabouts

He was buried in the Taylan district on Tal al-Raml (now the Taynal Mosque) on April 1, 1367 AD. The name "Sheikh Masoud" was inscribed on his grave to mislead the faithful regarding his actual resting place.
